• Qualunque cosa si dica, i giornalisti concludono le cose importanti. Sono pochi quelli che parlano con la stessa semplicità con cui parlo io di pregiudizi e razzismo. Ma avvolgono le cose importanti in così tante parole che il contenuto scompare.

Vad man än säger, lindar journalisterna in de viktiga. Det är knappast någon som talar det klarspråk jag gör när jag när det handlar om fördomar och rasism. Men de lindar in det viktiga i så många ord att innehållet försvinner.

• Il film deve essere mostrato nella misura più ampia possibile. Non è successo niente di speciale, a parte il fatto che Katarina ha sacrificato la sua vita. Lavorò per vent'anni e rimase in coma per quattordici anni, quando il suo cuore si fermò.

Filmen behöver visas i allra högsta grad. Det är ingenting särskilt som har hänt, fast att Katarina offrade sitt liv. Hon jobbade i tjugo år och låg i koma i fjorton när hennes hjärta stannade.

Jo, man går i dag ut och registrerar tvååringar i ett kriminellt brottsregister, varför gör man det? Bara för att de är romer. Tycker du att det låter bra? Och när jag pratar med Erik Ullenhag så frågar han vem han ska vända sig till för att tala om romer. Vänd dig till romerna själva. Det är vi som har bott i tält och i husvagn. Vi har haft nog av förståsigpåare, av uppslagsverk som säger att ”zigenare är ett mörkt folk med svarta, stirrande ögon, obenägna till hårt arbete. Deras främsta inkomstkälla är baserad på stöld, tiggeri och spådom”.

• La prossima volta che vorrai parlarmi, potrei essere in prigione, vuoi sapere perché? Adesso vado ad accusare il capo della polizia nazionale, Dan Eliasson, di mentire. Lui dice che si scusa e che coloro che hanno creato il registro dovrebbero essere rimossi, ma che sono stati concessi loro poteri maggiori.

• Si è sempre trattato di diritti umani, vedi. Che dovrebbero applicarsi anche a noi rom. Che dovremmo avere lo stesso diritto di guadagnarci una vita dignitosa come tutti gli altri, con alloggio, lavoro e istruzione. Noi non c'eravamo, bisogna saperlo!

It has always been about human rights, you see. That they should apply to us Roma too. That we should have the same right to make us a decent living like everybody else, with housing, employment and education. We were not there, it must be known!

• Sono molto grata per il lavoro svolto, ma 20 anni? Se un bambino che nasce oggi, non verrà trattato allo stesso modo finché non diventerà adulto? Una ventenne dovrebbe aspettare fino a 40? Sono impaziente, sai. Quanto durerà questo?

I am very grateful for the work done, but 20 years? If a baby borns today will not be treated equally unless it becomes an adult? Should a 20-year-old wait until 40? I'm impatient, you know. How long will this continue?

• Sono preoccupata. Stiamo tornando agli anni '30 e '40? Vediamo i rom nei Balcani, dove potrebbero vivere con i loro figli su cumuli di scorie tossiche. Vedo Buchenwald e Auschwitz davanti a me in quei paesi. Basta con il razzismo.

I am worried. Are we going back to the 1930 - and 40's? We see Roma in the Balkans, where they may live with their children on toxic slag heaps. I see the Buchenwald and Auschwitz in front of me in those countries. Enough of racism.

• Nessuno ci ha mai chiesto perché il popolo rom abbia sempre vissuto ai margini della società o come questo stile di vita abbia influenzato la struttura della famiglia rom. Come struzzi, le persone hanno nascosto la testa sotto la sabbia. Non volevano vedere o sentire; non volevano affrontare i fatti. È molto più semplice e molto più facile per la coscienza credere che il popolo rom sia costituito dai sopravvissuti "pittoreschi" di una nazione che specialisti, che non sono altro che ciarlatani, osano criticare con giudizi avventati e pregiudizi, usando espressioni come "Non vogliono vivere in case", "Devono essere liberi come uccelli" o "Sono sempre felici, cantano e recitano.

No one ever asked us why the Gypsy people has always lived on the fringe of society nor how this way of life has affected the structure of the Gypsy family. Like ostriches people buried their heads in the sand. They did not want to see or hear; they did not want to face the facts. It is so much simpler and so much easier on the conscience to believe that the Gypsy people consists of the 'picturesque' survivors of a nation that specialists who are no more than charlatans dare to criticize with rash judgments and prejudices, using such expressions as 'They don't want to live in houses', 'They must be as free as birds' or 'hey are always happy, singing and acting'.
