We seem to have this idea that, in order to write songs with any authority, we have to live dramatic, melancholy lives. I feel quite overwhelmed by the fragility of people. They are a little bit like me, is my belated conclusion. They don't foster a fantasy of me, which means I’m not bigger than what they might have perceived. They talk to me like I'm a real person. This is a relief.
