The security comes, as an actor, in knowing that you're not in control. If you try to control your career, or how people perceive you, you'll make yourself unhappy, because life doesn't work like that. So much is luck. It's much better to let yourself off, to think, "There's nothing I can do."

• Se reciti un tipo di parte in TV, ad esempio interpreti una seriosa spia che non sorride, come ho fatto io 10 anni fa circa, allora ti offrono tantissime parti serie. Pensi: "Be', non li farò perché è proprio quello che ho appena fatto". Stai a casa per sei mesi finché non viene fuori qualcosa di diverso, e allora questo in certo modo cambia le percezione delle persone. Provi a diversificarti, perché le persone non hanno davvero alcuna immaginazione. Gli attori devono far ricordare alla gente che possono fare cose diverse, non solo la stessa cosa.

If you play one type of part on the TV – say you play an unsmiling serious spy, like I did maybe 10 years ago, then you get offered a load of serious parts. You think, “Well, I won't do those because it's just what I've been doing.” You sit at home for six months until something different comes up, and then that sort of changes people’s perceptions. You try to keep it varied, because people don't really have any imagination. Actors have to remind people that they can do different things, not just the same thing.
