Andrew Hacker (1929 – vivente), politologo e scrittore statunitense.
- [C'è] un epiteto che sopravvive perché le persone vogliono che sopravviva. La vulnerabilità all'umiliazione può essere riassunta in una sola parola. Quella parola, naturalmente, è "negro". Quando un bianco la pronuncia diventa un coltello dal bordo affilato. Nessun nero può udirla con equanimità o ignorarla come "semplice parola". Questo termine ha la forza di trafiggere, ferire e penetrare come nessun altro. [...] I bianchi non hanno mai creato un epiteto così doloroso, neppure per gli individui più immorali della propria razza. I neri potranno anche usare la parola "negro" tra loro, ma con un tono e un'intenzione riconosciuti e compresi. Comunque, se sei nero, sai che è la società dei bianchi ad averla inventata e la lascia disponibile all'uso (ufficialmente no, certo non per iscritto; ma sai che continuano a sussurrarla a porte chiuse). È un ricordo persistente del fatto che sei ancora percepito come una specie degradata dell'umanità, a un livello al quale i bianchi non potrebbero mai scendere.
- [...] one epithet survives, because people want it to. Your vulnerability to humiliation can be summed up in a single word. That word, of course, is "nigger." When a white person voices it, it becomes a knife with a whetted edge. No black person can hear it with equanimity or ignore it as "simply a word". This word has the force to pierce, to wound, to penetrate as no other has. [...] It will reveal that whites have never created so wrenching an epithet for even the most benighted members of their own race. Black people may use "nigger" among themselves, but with a tone and intention that is known and understood. Even so, if you are black, you know white society devised this word and keeps it available for use. (Not officially, of course, or even in print; but you know it continues to be uttered behind closed doors.) It is a persistent reminder that you are still perceived as a degraded species of humanity, a level to which whites can never descend.
